Originally from Stuart, Florida, he attended South Fork High School, where he excelled in both football and baseball. Cleveland Gary transferred from the University of Georgia, after being on the cover of Inside Sports Magazine and rated as the best running back in the SEC as a true freshman.

In 1992 he rushed for 1,125 yards and caught 52 passes in one season and became one of the top backs in the NFL.
